Issue #106 dropped on Sunday 25th September amidst events of global and historical significance.
The cover for this issue was a tribute to Mahsa Amini and the revolution unfolding across the streets of Iran. We found inspiration in “Persepolis,” a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi that tells the story of her life growing up in Iran. It explores how the extremist nature of the Iranian regime clashed with the more liberal values of the younger generation.
The resulting image is simple yet profound. It shows Mahsa being harangued by the authorities even while she’s wearing her veil. In a moment of courage and determination, she removes the veil, only for the authorities to step up their persecution. This time, though, faces emerge from her hair, offering their support and driving the tormenting figures away.
The cover speaks of the resilience of the Iranian people, their courage and their desire for liberation. It isn’t a criticism of the hijab or religion, but rather a celebration of freedom. Redlion expresses its solidarity with the movement and we hope that the world continues to show its support.
