World Cuffs 2022

The issue dropped on the day of the Final, when Lionel Messi added his most sought honour to an already bulging trophy cabinet: the Jules Rimet. This truly was a day for the history books and one that football fanatic and big Argentina fan Amal felt more than most! We’d had a style in mind for this cover for several weeks (mixing football and NFTs) but the Final threw in a last-minute request: illustrations of Messi and Mbappe. 

This presented a unique challenge for Amal (who had never created a vector-style portrait before) but he drew inspiration from Daniel Nyari’s football illustrations to create his own, unique “angry Messi.” Amal’s vision of Messi shows all the passion, desire and determination that the maestro must have felt as he led his team to victory.

Other news events including Donald Trump and SBF appear on this animated, storyboard-style cover. Amal also played a part in the animation process before handing over to Dudley for the finishing touches. Of course, we had an Mbappe illustration as back-up in case the Final ended differently!

Gazette took a look at the biggest celebrity cringe moments of 2022 and how NFTs are fixing the diamond trade. We also explored the work of EDG, an artist giving life and language to aliens.
