VISA Breaking Bad

Issue #29 was published on Sunday 4th of April 2021, week 13 of the year. Visa, one of the foremost global payment technology companies, took a badass step into the future. This event was immortalized on our cover by Dudly.

Visa had just allowed payments in cryptocurrency. The company, with a current market cap of over $475 billion and processing over 150 million traditional payment transactions every day, had officially started utilizing stable coins as a settlement tool on the Ethereum blockchain. The costly and complex process of converting crypto first to fiat was out the window. 

Uniswap V3 had just dropped, and it was geared towards improving efficiency while at the same time Opensea announced support of the layer 2 scaling solution “Immutable X” to trade NFTs gas free.  Also in #29, we discussed generative art and Squiggle DAO, including the historic art collection “Chromie Squiggles”. 
Another meme NFT called “Overly Attached Girlfriend” had sold for an insane amount of 200ETH. 

Inspiration for the cover came from one of the most iconic episodic series, “Breaking Bad”. The idea was to depict VISA operations as a makeshift RV drug laboratory, cooking up some (m)ETH in the secrecy of the desert. 

As always, there are a handful of references used. The TV screen made a nice spot to add a couple of the week’s event references as well. So, besides the SNL parody video with Eminem, and ETH ATH news brought by Anchorman, we have also smuggled in our generative art project “Gazettes” as a commercial. Can you spot the others? The limited color palette is based on Visa’s brand colors which goes hand in hand with the wild west desert and the beautiful blue sky.
