Sotheby’s Sensational Natives

Issue #56 was published on Sunday, October 10, 2021, week 40 of the year. Sotheby’s had gone crazy for NFTs once again, perfectly depicted on our cover created by Dudly and Amal.

The week’s issue was packed with stories sure to excite the community. Sotheby’s went #NativelyDigital again; Ribbon VC Sybil suffered an attack, one that threw NFTs under the track; the BOTTO project launched, a community-directed fine artist that crafts art based on your feedback, and finally, a roundup article on the month. The Sotheby’s auction of NFTs (from collectors and handpicked by the curators) not only asserted the legitimacy of NFTs, but also validated them as a new breed of asset class that can potentially exist as long as the internet itself.

The layout for the artwork was fixed from the get-go: a playground with 2 sides, one a digital and another traditional. The first draft of the sketch was done by Dudly. Our new gun Amal was about to bring the illustration to live. Beginner’s luck is a fad and Amal will back this argument. There were some technical difficulties faced during the process of making the cover, but thanks to maestro Dudly the day was saved! The idea was shifted to a more working-together scenario. 

The artwork is populated by myriad references about the events from the week. Sotheby’s scoping for artists and collectors, Twitch leaks making noise, Meka robots drowning away, and other miscellaneous references have a jolly time in the meta playground. 

Going forward, this playground will have more to gain from cooperating than fighting for their own spaces, and only then can we learn the mistakes we make on either side.

The ArtDrop for  issue #56 was “The Realists’  Irrational Exuberance” by the artist Maxwelllinked, who creates monumental works  of art involving unbelievable number of lines, all by hand.
