Issue #63 was published on Sunday, November 28, 2021, week 47 of the year. NFTs were taking long strides through traditional art spaces and the celebratory cover for it was blasted out by Dudly and Amal.

NFTs Break Into Art Basel at Miami,” was a joyous piece of news to report! Recognition and appreciation waltz hand in hand. Not only was this good for NFTs alone, but also crypto that was already being recognized by companies in the form of paychecks for employees who opt for it. In research news, “topological structure of NFT networks show that their properties (degree distribution and others) are similar to those of interaction graphs in social networks.” Though it feels a bit weird to be compared to the likes of Zuck networks, the core behavior of large groups of human connections have always remained similar since the stone age.

Our initial concept for the cover was an abstract painting that would be different from our usual literal depictions. A few options were laid out, but none of them captured the feeling of Miami. We went back to the whiteboard and brainstormed some styles of paintings and finally agreed on one inspiration: Wynwood Walls, Miami. 
Wynwood Walls is an outdoor museum that has brought the world’s greatest artists working in the graffiti and street art genre to Miami. It’s an iconic place to visit in the city. The artwork was inspired by the cocktail graffiti style and palette. Long airbrush strokes, dirt-dusted paintings, edgy characters, and stencil art filled the artwork to the brim.

The animation was an ingenious idea born in the moment. It was decided that the abstract art would be placed in a gallery, but it’s also an NFT, making it not just restricted to its physical space. The juxtaposition that this idea brought into the picture elevated the concept of NFTs invading the fair. “Invading” is maybe not the right term to go by, as art never changes but only the means of producing it and experiencing it changes over time.
