Tribute to Ross Ulbricht

Issue #64 was published on Sunday, December 5, 2021, week 48 of the year. A solemn cover for a cause rooted in a tragic incident. The cover was created by Dudly and Amal.
Ross Ulbricht, founder of the Silk Road has remained a legendary pillar in the crypto community. 

Though he was indicted on several charges, Ross was the first to show the true power of freedom and what it can cost one if goes out of control. The community is constantly influenced by many degens, and so we made a list of the top-10 influencers that sparked some real debate in our comments. We also had an article on XCOPY, who has shown no signs of slowing down or losing value, having generated over 1,150ETH (at the time) in his last three primary sales alone. 

The cover was also sparked by the Free Ross movement releasing the genesis NFT collection of Ross Ulbricht to raise funds for families of non-violent offenders. Our concept was simple: to have a portrait artwork of Ross Ulbricht. After browsing through several styles of portrait we decided to go with one that has a texture of a marble statue that has stood the test of time. 

We included a simple animation through the spirals that were a metaphor for the growth of the spirit that the Free Ross movement has been gaining. A depth map was further added to bring the portrait to life with a spatial feel. 

A rare trait to this issue was that the issue number is shown in binary as 1000000 and it was the first time that the issue number is encrypted in such a manner to tickle nerdy brains. We also included the line “What it means to lose your freedom,” which echoed throughout his speech in a phone call with the Bitcoin community in attendance at Bitcoin 21, Miami.

The ArtDrop for issue #64 was “Organica-Orange Flux” by the artist Onyro Anthony, who continues to push boundaries with Houdini 3D software to create abstract works of art.
