Go-Ape-Nik

Issue #66 was published on Sunday, December 19, 2021, week 50 of the year. NFT wearables going mainstream, South Park commenting on NFTs, Adidas drop with BAYC – the week was wild! This crazy-ape cover to mark the week was created by Dudly and Amal.
NFTs in the form of clothing and avatar customization have started to become popular and this trend is cemented by the arrival of giants like Adidas and Nike into the metaverse. 

South Park featuring NFTs in their episode “Post COVID: The Return of COVID” started a wave of WGMI tweets. Kids and collectors may one day look forward to collecting Happy Meal NFTs given the Fast Food NFT trend that’s also moving pieces in the metaverse.

The first idea for the cover was that it will be in South Park style, to highlight the Adidas drop that didn’t go the way they expected due to their lack of knowledge in NFTs. Another incident we were excited to add was the incident involving  Adidas customer support. The personnel responsible suggested a minter to contact Ethereum for NFT support. Whether or not it was a quick cash grab will be something we have to wait and witness.
Red introduced Gopniks to the rest of us, suggesting that that was the way to go. For those who are not familiar with Gopnik, it is a Russian drunken hooligan, small-time lout, and criminal. The persona fits right in, especially because of the 3-stripe Originals tracksuits most of them wear.

We slipped the ape into a Gopnik and placed him inside an “Abibas” store. Outside you can see the degens rioting against the poorly managed drop that left many in the existential crisis: humans or robots?
Once the illustrations were complete, Dudly took it to a whole new level with the animation. To rig the character and animate such uncanny dance moves is no easy job, especially with a short deadline in sight. The animation was paired with an iconic OG Gopniks track as the icing on the cake. 

Undoubtedly, giant corps will continue to dip their toes in and out to test the NFT waters. None of them have gotten it right so far. So, who will?

The ArtDrop for issue #66 was “Enceladus Red Balm Alstroemeria” by the artist Deconstruct, who creates trippy crypto AI art with good vibes only!
