Issue #69 was published on Sunday 9th Jan 2022 and was the first gazette of the year.

The issue and cover were heavily influenced by the passing of the Bogdanoff brothers, a huge presence in the crypto space who left their mark through memes and cultural commentary. We designed a commemorative cover that posed the twins as the numbers 6 and 9. After going through several iterations we settled on an art style that was simple but immediately recognisable. In other words; this cover had to be iconic.

We couldn’t have gone to press without using the twin’s iconic “pump it” and “dump it” dialogues. The two were sometimes considered puppet masters able to influence the crypto markets at will. As the cover images flip, so too do the markets. “Pump it” and “dump it” alternate in a perfect reflection of the often topsy-turvy world of crypto.

This turned into one of our most recognisable covers yet and its stark but playful design still stands out. The Bogdanoffs were also the lead article. “Meme Twins” traced not just their history as cultural icons but the architecture of memes more generally. It highlighted the brother’s rise to “immortal gods of this universe.”

Elsewhere, #69 covered the political strife in Kazakhstan. As protestors took to the streets over gas prices, the government retaliated by turning off the internet, posing difficult questions about what “decentralisation” actually means.

The ArtDrop for #69 was ‘A New Day’ by Zeus Creates. This idyllic piece features a full day/night cycle and perfectly captures the calming wonder of nature.
