Issue #72 was released on Sunday 30th January with a nautical-themed cover to reflect the ongoing turmoil around OpenSea.

The biggest NFT marketplace in the world was quickly gaining a reputation for being a minefield of scams, misinformation, bugs and disasters. It was a catastrophic week for OpenSea as a known exploit allowed users to buy NFTs for well below floor price and then sell them for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The cover duly portrayed a sea fraught with peril including mines, sharks and jellyfish.

A steampunk-style submarine flounders amidst all the danger, unable to make any meaningful progress without running into a mine or a shark. This cover went through several different manifestations (all of them involving a dangerous open sea) until Dudley created a still frame of the submarine idea. It blew us away and the 3D version was born. 

The render took 10 hours (with heavy storms causing power outages). Look out for small details like the lobsters on the seafloor (a reference to Jordan Belfort) and the deadly “update” labels on the mines.

Unsurprisingly, the OpenSea exploit led Gazette. The article outlined how valuable NFTs were being scooped for low prices, OpenSea’s botched response and how users could best protect themselves. Problems with SuperRare’s curation methodology and a guide to effective NFT marketing techniques also made the article list.
