Sunday 17th April saw the release of Issue #83, which paid homage to r/place.

r/place was a 2017 online canvas on Reddit that allowed users to create amazing pieces of art from around the world. It was a huge cultural and artistic movement and (arguably) one of the high points of Web1 creativity. When Reddit decided to resurrect the canvas for new artists, we had to pay tribute.

The initial idea was to populate the cover with tiny pixel art. As noble as this aim was, it would never have been finished in time for release. Instead, we decided to fill the canvas with crypto/NFT iconography. We weren’t short of inspiration - the cover consists of 80 layers referencing everything from BAYC and “GM” to Satoshi and ETH.

Dudly added a cool reverse-erasure effect so that it looks as though the cover is being created with a spray can. The result was a quirky, retro cover that continued our trend of experimentation and doing something new every week.

Gazette explored the history of r/place in more detail (as well as how opportunists were taking advantage of other people’s art). We also interviewed FAR (a pioneer in the Web3 architecture movement) and did a countdown of the biggest NFT fails from mainstream gaming companies.
