A stranger-than-fiction story came to light that week when the world saw the power of a coordinated short squeeze from everyday people of r/WallStreetBets against the greedy investors shorting GME stock to death.

Issue #20 came out on Sunday 31st of January 2021, the 4th week of the year. It was created with great love and care by Dudly and appropriately named “WSB vs Evil”.

A stranger-than-fiction story came to light that week when the world saw the power of a coordinated short squeeze from everyday people of r/WallStreetBets against the greedy investors shorting GME stock to death. 

The cover depicts a real-life translation of the memetic logo of WSB with a semi-photo-realistic digitally painted style. The reflection on his sunglasses is from the paparazzi cameras. This pseudo-3D effect requires manually creating a depth map for the drawing. Simply put, the lighter areas are closer to the camera than the dark ones. A small detail that catches the eye is the Reddit pin on his tux.

This moment served as a wake-up call for traditional market participants and illustrated the importance of using decentralized protocols. The Robinhood trading platform effectively screwed its users to protect their funds.

In other news: we had fun watching Pranksy’s interview on FOX News and some of the first mentions of NFTs on U.S. news channels. Mark Cuban started minting his NFTs on Rarible, we covered the FLOW blockchain and showed a very niche Ethereum game “Dark Forest” in our Shameless Shilling section.

Looking back in time makes one realize how far and how fast the NFT industry has grown. Ah! Good ol’ hindsight.
