Dropping on Sunday 13th March, Issue #78 marked a historic moment in NFT history: Yuga Labs acquired Crypto Punks and Meebits from Larva Labs.

The reaction across the space was understandably mixed so we looked for a way to represent the acquisition using non-aggressive imagery. We opted for a colourful, children’s book style design and then started searching for the right brushes to render the required textures. The result is hypnotic as bubbles rise from the seabed.

Of course, BAYC took centre stage in the form of a giant fish gobbling up everything around it. Smaller, punk fish drift too close to the Ape and are promptly swallowed alive. The fish bobs on undulating currents that will shape the future of the NFT space for years to come. After getting the brush strokes right, the cover was partly animated using frame by frame for the gigantic fish and also AE. Its soft hues and smooth brush strokes give a tranquil aesthetic despite the tempestuous mood across social media.

Yuga’s acquisition was the main article for this issue as we explored what it means for the future of pfps and NFTs more generally. Pieces on Andre Cronje and Anton Nell’s shock decision to quit DeFi (leaving investors furious) and Joe Biden’s Executive Order to research blockchain tech showed what a significant week this was.

The ArtDrop for this issue portrayed a fantastical city full of detail, life and hustle-bustle. Look closely at “Goodtopia” and you’ll find everything from steampunk airships to gondolas and a giant cat!
