What a way to kick off Spooktober, right?
Last week was a bit slow and there were no sensational dramas in NFTs that we could illustrate. I was struggling a little to come up with a solid concept, so I asked Red for a piece of advice. He told me to watch videos about "liminal spaces" and proposed to make the cover very minimal but with a sense of monumentality.
These were the initial sketches showing only a coffee table, but we immediately agreed that it needed a monumental space as background.
What is Liminal Space?
In architecture, liminal spaces are defined as "the physical spaces between one destination and the next." Common examples of such spaces include hallways, airports, and streets.
- Wikipedia (read the entire page on Liminality here as there are plenty of meanings)
These spaces often feel "off" and could be very unsettling. The word liminal is of Latin origin (limen) and means threshold. A liminal space is between the "before" and "next". It means a transition while waiting and not knowing.
It isn't 100% confirmed that Twitter will integrate the NFT profile picture verification, but we are 100% sure that we are in the liminal space of this transitional "corridor" of inevitable mass adoption for NFTs -> blockchain.
This new paradigm shift will be monumental, for many people a bit scary even. It can possibly bring the greatest technology revolution after the invention of the internet when innovation and adoption were also led by "leisure" activities. Are NFTs the entry point for masses to acknowledge the blockchain technology, to learn it, and most importantly, to use it? We will see. We need to pass that corridor first.
We tried to depict the transition with this slightly spooky cover art. The size of the space is monumental and the coffee table with a levitating Twitter logo is the only object that can put us into perspective.
The opening door revealing the Ethereum sign is forming a letter "T" using the light. "T" as transform, transition, threshold. The artwork is backed with eerie music and sounds to underline this heavy atmosphere (Kudos to Amal for the pick).
I hope you enjoyed this piece. See you next week!
